Jaishankar Urges Iran to Prevent Attacks on Merchant Vessels, Expresses Deep Concern Over Rising Tensions

NEW DELHI — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, on Friday evening, during which he conveyed India’s deep concern over escalating hostilities and tensions in the turbulent Middle East region. The call came at a time when maritime security in the Persian Gulf and surrounding sea routes has seen a marked decline. Jaishankar urged his Iranian counterpart to ensure that merchant vessels and crew operating in international waters are protected from any form of attack.
The minister stated clearly that attacks on commercial ships and innocent crew members must be prevented under all circumstances, emphasizing that India unequivocally condemns any such act of aggression, regardless of which party is responsible. Notably, a large number of Indian nationals work aboard merchant vessels, making their safety a matter of paramount importance for New Delhi.
According to the minister’s post, Araghchi briefed him on current geopolitical developments and the ongoing diplomatic negotiations aimed at de-escalating regional tensions, from Iran’s perspective. Jaishankar took note of the briefing and reiterated India’s firm commitment to resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy, stressing that peaceful negotiations remain the only viable path to achieving lasting stability in the region.
