The grandmother of Hind Rajab on Wednesday rejected an Israeli military investigation into her granddaughter’s killing in Gaza in January 2024, saying the family does not trust local probes and is demanding an independent international inquiry, Anadolu News Agency reported.
The Israeli military had acknowledged it fired on Rajab’s vehicle in January 2024 and later announced a criminal investigation into the incident. The military also indicated in March 2025 that it would investigate the killing of 15 aid and medical workers in Rafah. Despite these moves, Rajab’s family says they have no confidence in Israeli military or judicial investigations and allege the civilian vehicle carrying Hind, her uncle, his wife and children was deliberately targeted.
According to the family, Hind was traveling with relatives while trying to escape bombing and fighting when their car was shot near the Fares petrol station in Gaza City. The family released an audio recording of Hind’s last call pleading for help, which sparked international outrage. Hind, six relatives who were in the vehicle and two Palestinian Red Crescent medical personnel sent to rescue them were later found dead days after the call.
The Hind Rajab Foundation also dismissed the Israeli inquiry as insufficient and urged independent international scrutiny. The case has drawn renewed attention to the protection of civilians and medical personnel in Gaza, with human rights groups and relatives calling for a transparent, impartial investigation and accountability. International pressure for further inquiry and documentation of the incident continues.
