The world’s youngest reigning monarch, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, has died at the age of 34. He ascended the throne at just three years old and was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest monarch.
Uganda’s Toro Kingdom announced his death on Thursday night. King Oyo was born on April 16, 1992, and was crowned on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
Oyo headed the Toro Kingdom, whose people make up roughly 3 percent of Uganda’s population of more than 45 million. Uganda has several traditional kingdoms, though their roles are largely ceremonial, as the country is governed by an elected president.
Because of his young age, a regency council was formed to manage his affairs, comprising his mother, Queen Best Kemigisa, members of the Toro royal family, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. This arrangement continued until Oyo turned 18.
Toro Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwamuhire Akiiki, announced the king’s death in a statement posted on the social media platform X. He wrote: “It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of the Omukama (King) of Toro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, which occurred tonight at approximately 10 p.m.”
The kingdom did not disclose details about the king’s illness or the hospital where he died. However, media reports have claimed he was battling cancer and was receiving treatment in the United States.
A statement from the Toro Kingdom described his death as an irreparable loss for the royal family, the people of Toro, and the whole of Uganda. It said further details, including burial and mourning arrangements, would be announced later.
