TEHRAN/WASHINGTON: Iran’s military said Monday it launched a swarm of explosive drones targeting US troops and helicopters stationed at Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE, in retaliation for Sunday’s American strikes on Iran’s Lark Island. The military vowed further retaliatory action, saying the attack was a response to the deaths of IRGC members and civilians in the US strikes.
Separately, Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone with a missile over the Strait of Hormuz, sending it crashing into Gulf waters. The development followed Sunday’s US strikes on two Iranian missile launchers on Lark Island — reportedly the first American strikes on Iranian territory since late July, targeting systems believed to be prepping rockets to lay sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC said several personnel and civilians were killed or wounded in the strikes.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Monday that Tehran does not seek war but “will never stay silent in the face of aggression,” vowing a “decisive response” to any renewed attack, en route to a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek.
President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated video Sunday depicting the fictional destruction of Iran’s Kharg Island, writing on Truth Social that it had been “blown to pieces.” Kharg Island, which normally handles about 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports, has reportedly been inactive since July 31, according to tracking firm Kpler. In a Fox News interview, Trump reiterated that Iran must never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, calling Iranian leadership “extremely violent, bad people” and claiming the US is “winning easily.”
