LAHORE: Research conducted by Punjab University Assistant Professor Dr. Khurram Shahzad on the scientific identification of fake news and propaganda material has received international recognition following his invitation to conduct a special training workshop at Bielefeld University in Germany.

Dr. Khurram Shahzad, who conducted the workshop as a trainer, delivered a special session on the emergence, spread and impact of fake news related to migration on social media.

The workshop was attended by Dr. Aksakal, research assistants, and undergraduate and master’s students of Bielefeld University.

During the workshop, Dr. Khurram Shahzad presented 11 scientific methods for identifying fake news, based on his PhD research conducted in Pakistan. His research developed a model comprising 11 scientific indicators to help identify propaganda and misleading information.

As a case study, the workshop examined fake news and misleading information related to migration circulating in Germany. Participants discussed how such content can spread through social media and influence public perceptions.

Dr. Khurram Shahzad emphasized the importance of academic cooperation between universities in Pakistan and Germany, saying that stronger academic contacts can contribute to addressing issues of mutual concern.

He also appreciated the efforts of German Ambassador to Pakistan Anna Lippel for promoting relations and contacts between Pakistan and Germany.

Dr. Aksakal said that false and unverified information can influence public opinion and policy debates concerning migration. Misleading information related to migration can also create misunderstandings within societies, he added.

He stressed that acquiring skills to examine propaganda material through systematic and scientific methods is essential for addressing various social problems.

The workshop also featured an extensive question-and-answer session in which students raised questions about simple and scientific approaches to identifying fake news and distinguishing verified information from propaganda material.
