AI Leaders Warn UN Security Council: World Could Lose Control of AI

NEW YORK,  — Leading AI executives warned the UN Security Council on Wednesday that governments must act urgently to prevent artificial intelligence from becoming too powerful and unaccountable.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei cautioned that poorly governed AI could pose an existential risk to humanity. OpenAI’s Sam Altman said the world risks losing control of its future to AI, while Hugging Face’s Clément Delangue also addressed the council despite technical difficulties with his remote connection.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres reinforced the warnings, stating that “life-and-death decisions should never be delegated to machines,” while French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot compared the moment to the dawn of the nuclear age.
Consensus remains elusive. The UK backed global standards, but US President Trump rejected any “global scheme” to control AI, and China’s envoy insisted nations should remain free to choose their own AI technologies. The debate coincided with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington.
