Washington — US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming either the Atlantic or the Pacific Ocean as the “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the Americas,” following his earlier moves to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.
Speaking at an election rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, Trump said the United States now has a gulf and a beautiful lake, and therefore needs an ocean as well. He suggested that the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean — or possibly both — could be renamed.
Trump said that before leaving office, he believed the US should also have an ocean and a great river.
After returning to the White House last year, Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum mocked the move, suggesting that the entire North American continent be renamed “Mexican America.”
In August, during failed trade talks with Canada, Trump suggested renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” Google Maps now displays the lake’s name as either “Lake Ontario” or “Lake America” depending on the user’s location, while users outside the US and Canada see both names.
Trump said the idea of renaming the lake had been on his mind for some time, adding that the Gulf of Mexico was now commonly referred to as the Gulf of America.
