New York: The United Nations has expressed concern over alleged human rights violations and the reportedly unnecessary use of force against protesters during large-scale demonstrations under way in several European countries.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Tuesday voiced concern over ongoing protests in Albania, Belgium, France, Italy and Portugal, saying they were raising human rights concerns. He condemned all incidents of violence and called on all relevant parties to de-escalate tensions and take measures to prevent further violence.
Turk said people have the right to protest peacefully and raise their voices, while states have a responsibility to enable the exercise of these rights. He expressed concern over reports of unnecessary and excessive use of force against protesters, including children.
He said every action by law enforcement agencies must be lawful, necessary and proportionate to the circumstances. The UN high commissioner called for prompt, effective and independent investigations into allegations of unlawful use of force, accountability for those responsible, and effective measures to ensure justice for victims.
Turk urged governments to initiate meaningful, inclusive and constructive dialogue with protesters, particularly young people. He said the best and only way forward was comprehensive and safe dialogue.
