US President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Norway after being denied the Nobel Peace Prize, calling the country a “shithouse country” and saying Norwegian immigrants would not be welcomed in the United States.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, ahead of next week’s midterm elections, Trump said he would welcome immigrants from certain countries but not from Norway “because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize.” He added, “So I don’t want anybody from Norway.”
Trump linked his remarks to recent unrest in France, which he attributed to immigration, and said Norway had “become a shithouse country.” However, there was no indication that the Trump administration was adopting any new official policy affecting Norwegian immigrants.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee reiterated that it is entirely independent of the Norwegian government and that the government plays no role in selecting Peace Prize laureates. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide also said Trump knows the committee is independent.
Norway’s Foreign Ministry and the Nobel Committee did not directly respond to Trump’s vulgar remarks, while Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre had earlier said that the Nobel Committee operates independently and faces no government interference or pressure.
