WASHINGTON/ANCHORAGE — U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday for high-stakes talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, with reports suggesting that Washington is preparing significant economic incentives for Moscow.
According to the UK’s The Telegraph, Trump’s proposal could grant Russia access to Alaska’s natural resources, Ukrainian rare earth minerals, and include the lifting of certain sanctions on Russia’s aircraft industry. The reported plan is part of a broader strategy to secure a peace agreement acceptable to both sides.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other senior officials are said to be working intensively with the president to finalise the offer before the summit.
The move comes after Kyiv and Washington signed a mineral access deal in April, giving the U.S. rights to exploit Ukraine’s vast mineral reserves. The Kyiv School of Economics estimates Ukraine holds one-third of Europe’s lithium reserves and 3% of the global total.
The Alaska meeting marks a rare face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict, with global markets and diplomatic circles closely watching the outcome.
