Lahore. Along with Pakistan, countries across the globe are marking the International Day of Democracy today. Observed every year on September 15, the day aims to promote democratic values, highlight the importance of strong democratic institutions, and raise awareness about their role in improving people’s quality of life.
Since its first observance in 2008, the day has been commemorated annually through a range of activities including conferences, debates, and awareness campaigns organized by the United Nations, governments, and civil society groups worldwide.
According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), democracy is defined as a system in which citizens freely elect their representatives. Its key elements include regular, free, and fair elections, equal participation, transparency, and the guarantee of freedom of expression. Ensuring equality in elections is seen as central to giving all citizens an equal voice in shaping their government.
