Islamabad: The chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Major General (R) Hafeez-ur-Rehman, has disclosed that the personal information of nearly 300,000 people who applied for Hajj has been leaked onto the dark web.
Speaking before the Senate Standing Committee on IT, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, he said the breach was initially detected in 2022. He also revealed that even his own SIM data has been available on the dark web since then, stressing that spectrum auction is vital to resolve the country’s internet problems.
Meanwhile, government Senator Afnan Ullah Khan told the committee that Pakistan has been under external pressure not to enact legislation to safeguard citizens’ data.
