KARACHI — Inflation continued to edge upward in Pakistan as prices of 24 essential household items increased during the past week, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The weekly inflation, measured through the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), rose by 0.49% week-on-week and 4.57% year-on-year.
The PBS report shows that prices of 24 items increased, 8 items declined, while 19 remained unchanged.
Significant price hikes were recorded for tomatoes (33.2%), onions (8.7%), eggs (2.18%), and flour (1.42%). Meanwhile, prices of chicken (-6.38%), bananas (-4.7%), and petrol (-2.09%) dropped during the same period.
The SPI for the week ending October 16 stood at 334.39 points, compared to 332.75 points last week and 319.79 points in the corresponding week last year.
Low-income households were the hardest hit, with those earning up to Rs17,732 per month experiencing a 1.07% increase in the price index, while higher income groups faced smaller increases.
