Sugar prices in Pakistan have soared to unprecedented levels, hitting Rs. 210 per kilogram, despite government efforts to stabilize the commodity’s cost. The latest figures from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reveal that sugar prices have increased by up to Rs. 10 per kg within just one week.
According to the PBS report, residents of Peshawar are paying the highest prices in the country, with sugar selling for as much as Rs. 210 per kg. In Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Bannu, the maximum retail price has reached Rs. 200 per kg, while in Karachi, sugar is being sold at around Rs. 195 per kg.
The report further notes that the average national price of sugar has climbed to Rs. 188.81 per kg, compared to Rs. 185.04 per kg the previous week. A year ago, the average price stood at Rs. 134.08 per kg, marking an increase of nearly Rs. 54 per kg over the past 12 months.
Despite repeated assurances and interventions by the authorities to curb inflation, sugar continues to remain one of the most expensive essential commodities in the country, putting further pressure on already strained household budgets.
