Peshawar: Polling is underway in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly to elect a new senator for the general seat left vacant after Shibli Faraz, a senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, was disqualified following his conviction in cases related to the May 9, 2023 riots.
Three candidates are contesting the by-election, but the main competition is expected between Khurram Zeeshan, an independent candidate backed by PTI, and Taj Mohammad Afridi, supported by the opposition alliance.
Another PTI-backed candidate, Irfan Saleem, is listed as a covering candidate for Khurram Zeeshan.
Voting began at 9:30 a.m. and will continue until 4:00 p.m. under the supervision of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
