Peshawar: An explosion at the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) police station on University Road in Peshawar killed one officer and injured two others, police officials confirmed on Saturday.
According to Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Mian Saeed, the blast occurred inside the station’s explosives storage room, where old explosive material detonated accidentally. He ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack.
“The explosion was caused by old explosives stored in the CTD building,” Saeed said. “The fire spread to nearby ammunition, triggering further blasts. One officer was martyred and two others were injured.”
Authorities said all detainees held in the police lock-up were safely evacuated. The blast caused a section of the building to collapse, prompting police and security forces to cordon off the area.
Teams from the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU), rescue services, and the fire brigade were deployed to the site to control the situation and investigate the cause of the explosion.
An inquiry has been launched to determine how the old explosives were being stored and what led to the accidental detonation.
