LAHORE, PAKISTAN: HBL Microfinance Bank (HBL MfB), in collaboration with the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), has begun the first disbursements under Pakistan’s pioneering climate-smart agri-finance program, leveraging satellite data intelligence. The initiative marks a significant step toward technology-driven, sustainable agriculture in the country.
The pilot program uses satellite data intelligence, crop monitoring, and remote-sensing analytics to assess crop health, manage risk, and facilitate more accurate and timely agricultural credit decisions. With the first loan now disbursed, the partnership moves from planning to active implementation.
Amir Khan, President & CEO of HBL Microfinance Bank, said:
“Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, yet highly vulnerable to climate shocks. By integrating satellite intelligence into agri-financing, we are equipping farmers with tools to withstand climate risks, improve productivity, and contribute to national food security. This partnership also strengthens risk management for the banking sector and reflects our commitment to innovative, inclusive, and climate-resilient financial solutions.”
Using SUPARCO’s remote-sensing capabilities and HBL MfB’s extensive field presence, farmers will receive accurate assessments of land use, crop patterns, and vegetation stress, allowing the bank to extend financing that is smarter, faster, and aligned with real conditions on the ground.
Zafar Iqbal, Member (SAR) at SUPARCO, added:
“This collaboration demonstrates how Pakistan’s space technology can directly support economic development. By applying satellite analytics to agriculture, we strengthen livelihoods and enhance national climate resilience.”
With agriculture employing nearly half of Pakistan’s workforce and contributing significantly to GDP, this data-driven, climate-smart financing model is a critical step toward sustainable growth. The HBL-SUPARCO partnership is expected to serve as a blueprint for scaling satellite-enabled agri credit across the country.
