Karachi — The boy who recovered the body of a child who fell into an open manhole near Nipa Chowrangi was honoured by SSP East Dr. Farrukh, who presented him with a garland and a bouquet in recognition of his efforts.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday at around 10 pm, when three-year-old Ibrahim, who had stepped out of a departmental store in Gulshan-e-Iqbal with his parents, stood on a manhole covered temporarily with cardboard due to the absence of a lid.
The cardboard failed to support the child’s weight, causing Ibrahim to fall into the manhole and disappear. His body was recovered 14 hours later, about one kilometre away, from a drainage channel.
It was a local boy who discovered the child’s body, and the police acknowledged his role today by presenting him with a garland and bouquet.
The funeral prayer for Ibrahim was offered yesterday in Shah Faisal Colony, after which he was laid to rest in a nearby cemetery.
The prayer was led by the child’s grandfather, Mahmood-ul-Hasan, and attended by a large number of local residents, along with political representatives including Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Ameer Muneem Zafar and MQM MPA Shariq Jamal.
Earlier, the child’s maternal grandfather had demanded the resignation of the Karachi mayor, saying that political leaders come to seek votes but no one came to help the family in their time of need.
