Canberra: New details have emerged regarding the Bondi Beach attack in Sydney, revealing that the alleged attacker, Sajid Akram, traveled to the Philippines using an Indian passport.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Philippine immigration authorities have confirmed that Sajid Akram, implicated in the Bondi Beach attack in Australia, entered the Philippines on an Indian passport. His son, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, reportedly traveled to the Philippines as an Australian citizen.
The report states that both individuals arrived in the Philippines from Sydney on November 1, with their final destination listed as the southern province of Davao. They later departed the Philippines on November 28.
Australian police are investigating the purpose of the attackers’ travel to the Philippines as part of ongoing inquiries into the incident, news agencies reported.
Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement that the attackers were influenced by ISIS ideology, adding that the world continues to face the threat of ISIS-linked extremism and hate-driven narratives.
Separately, the New South Wales Police Commissioner said that an improvised explosive device and two ISIS flags were recovered from the attackers’ vehicle.
It is worth noting that two days ago, two armed individuals opened fire on civilians at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, killing 16 people and injuring at least 40 others.
