LAHORE: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar on Tuesday said that the Punjab Police have taken practical and comprehensive measures to address the legitimate issues faced by the transporters’ community, while maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards traffic violations to ensure the protection of human lives.
He made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation of office-bearers from various Goods Transport Associations of Punjab and Sindh at the Central Police Office in Lahore. The delegation comprised representatives of the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance, United Goods Transport Alliance, Sindh Goods Transport Owners Association, Karachi Goods Carriers Association, Local Goods Transport Association, Supreme Council of Transporters, All Pakistan Truck Trailer Owners Association, All Pakistan Goods Mazda Owners Association, Half Body Trailer and Dumper Committee, and the Transport Carrier Association.
The delegation appreciated the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif regarding traffic reforms and initiatives aimed at safeguarding human lives, and assured full cooperation with the Punjab Police. President of the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance, Shehzad Awan, briefed the IG Punjab on various challenges being faced by the transporters.
Addressing the delegation, Dr. Usman Anwar said that there would be no compromise on road safety, and indiscriminate crackdowns against traffic violations would continue. He said that linking goods transport terminals and vehicles with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority’s monitoring system would help prevent incidents of theft, robbery, and dacoity, adding that coordination between the Safe Cities Authority and transporters is being further strengthened to improve traffic management.
The IG Punjab urged transporters to ensure the elimination of overloading, the use of genuine number plates, the validity of vehicle fitness certificates, and proper training and schooling of truck drivers to prevent accidents. He stressed that drivers involved in serious traffic accidents must present themselves before the police to face legal proceedings.
He directed that FIRs related to crimes against goods transporters be registered promptly and recoveries ensured at the earliest. Dr. Usman Anwar also said that the process of obtaining driving licences for goods transport drivers has been simplified and made more efficient, while concerns related to challans, fines, FIRs, and vehicle impoundment have been addressed.
To curb illegal parking of trucks and goods vehicles on roads, the IG Punjab emphasized that transporters should allocate designated stand locations in all districts. He further assured the delegation that issues concerning the Customs and Excise Departments would be taken up with the relevant authorities.
During the meeting, it was mutually agreed to develop a joint mechanism through coordination and consensus to resolve issues between the Punjab Police and goods transporters.
Additional IG South Punjab Muhammad Kamran Khan and Managing Director Punjab Safe Cities Authority Muhammad Ahsan Younis participated in the meeting via video link.
