The Bangladesh Army has carried out a sweeping reshuffle of its top brass, with Army Headquarters issuing formal directives on Sunday — just days after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s government assumed power on February 17.
Lieutenant General Muhammad Mainur Rahman, previously the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC), has been appointed as the Army’s new Chief of General Staff (CGS), succeeding Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shamim who recently retired.
In another major change, Lieutenant General Mir Mushfiqur Rahman has been appointed Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division. He previously served as the GOC of the 24th Infantry Division in Chittagong. Outgoing PSO Lieutenant General SM Kamrul Hasan has been transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an ambassador.
Brigadier General Md Hafizur Rahman, who was serving as Defence Adviser at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, has been promoted to Major General and will be posted as GOC of the 55th Infantry Division upon his return to Bangladesh.
The reshuffle also sees Major General Kaiser Rashid Chowdhury appointed as the new Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), while outgoing DGFI chief Major General Mohammad Jahangir Alam has been attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ahead of an overseas diplomatic posting. The move is widely viewed as an attempt by the new leadership to consolidate its grip over the armed forces by replacing senior officers who had been appointed under the previous administration led by Muhammad Yunus. (RTÉ) Defence Ministry officials, however, have described the changes as routine transfers.
