LAHORE: Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the launch of a free ambulance service for transporting deceased persons from public hospitals to their homes — a first-of-its-kind initiative in Punjab.
The approval was granted during a special meeting chaired by the Chief Minister to review arrangements for providing free transportation facilities to bereaved families. She directed authorities to submit a comprehensive plan for deploying dedicated government vehicles at major public hospitals and in every tehsil across the province.
During the meeting, it was agreed in principle to regulate private ambulance services, while proposals to introduce standardized rates for private operators were also reviewed to prevent overcharging.
Secretary Emergency Services Dr. Rizwan Naseer briefed participants that at least one vehicle would be allocated in each tehsil to ensure timely transportation of deceased persons from hospitals to their residences.
Families will be able to avail the free service either by calling the Rescue 1122 helpline or by submitting a request at hospital help counters.
The briefing further highlighted that the dead body transfer service will be monitored through a smart management system to ensure transparency and efficiency. Additionally, the service will also facilitate free inter-city transportation of deceased persons when required.
The initiative is aimed at easing the financial burden on grieving families and ensuring dignified and timely transportation services across Punjab.
