Lahore: Leading researcher on organic food and products, Najam Mazari, has urged the government to adopt a data-driven strategy and allocate dedicated funding in the upcoming federal budget to strengthen export-oriented sectors, particularly the organic industry.
In a statement, he called on policymakers to set aside a separate budget for the promotion of organic farming, enabling farmers to access training, certification, and modern technologies needed to compete in international markets. He warned that without targeted financial support and structured planning, Pakistan risks falling behind in the rapidly expanding global organic market.
Mazari emphasised that boosting exports requires in-depth analysis of international market trends and consumer demand patterns. He proposed a comprehensive national strategy under which formal funding is allocated for data analytics in export sectors, especially organic food and value-added products.
“Global demand for organic products is growing at a fast pace, but Pakistan has yet to tap its full potential,” he said, adding that a well-developed organic sector could not only enhance export revenues but also improve access to safe and healthy food within the country.
Highlighting regulatory gaps, Mazari pointed to the unregulated use of pesticides and fertilisers as a major concern. He warned that excessive and uncontrolled application of agricultural chemicals is harming public health and undermining quality standards required in international markets.
He urged the government to introduce clear policies and enforce legislation to regulate the use of agricultural inputs, ensuring compliance with global standards. Such measures, he said, are critical for improving export competitiveness and restoring confidence among international buyers.
