Musical biopic set to break records, expected to earn up to $100 million in opening week
Los Angeles (Special Correspondent) — Despite pre-release controversies and mixed critical reviews, the Michael Jackson biopic Michael is racing toward a historic box office debut. The Lionsgate-backed film is projected to earn between $90 million and $100 million in its opening week in the United States.
The strong start was fuelled by approximately $12 million from pre-weekend previews, along with an estimated $39.5 million on opening Friday alone.
A Record-Breaking Milestone
Even if the film lands at the lower end of projections, it will comfortably surpass Straight Outta Compton, which currently holds the record for the biggest opening weekend for a musical biopic.
Lionsgate Responds
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chairman Adam Fogelson praised the entire team behind the film, stating: “This record-breaking performance is a testament to the brilliant filmmaking of producer Graham King and director Antoine Fuqua, the outstanding cast led by Jaafar Jackson’s extraordinary performance, our world-class partners at Universal, the support of the Jackson family, and the tireless work of our incredibly talented Lionsgate team.”
