Bekasi, Indonesia— At least 14 to 15 people were killed and more than 80 others injured after two trains collided near Indonesia’s capital Jakarta on Monday night. Eyewitnesses reported that rescue workers are using heavy machinery to cut through the mangled metal structures of the train carriages to free trapped passengers.
The crash occurred at Bekasi Timur Station when a long-distance train (reportedly the Argo Bromo Anggrek) slammed into the rear of a stationary commuter train. According to officials, the incident was triggered when a commuter train hit a stalled electric taxi on a level crossing, causing it to stop abruptly on the tracks. Nearly an hour later, the second train rear-ended it, with the impact particularly severe on a women-only carriage.
Rescue operations continued into Tuesday, with emergency teams working to extract survivors still trapped in the wreckage. A total of 81 to 88 injured passengers have been hospitalized. The CEO of state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), Bobby Rasyidin, confirmed the latest casualty figures.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has ordered a full investigation into the accident. Rail crashes are not uncommon on Indonesia’s aging railway network.
Authorities have not yet released the final death toll as rescue efforts are ongoing.
