LAHORE: Principal of Post Graduate Medical Institute, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal, has said that modern diagnostics, genetic testing and integrated treatment are essential in effectively combating complex genetic disorders such as Cystic Fibrosis. He emphasized that timely diagnosis and proper parental guidance can significantly improve the quality of life of affected children.
He expressed these views while addressing the inauguration ceremony of a dedicated Cystic Fibrosis Clinic and an awareness seminar organized by the Department of Pediatrics at Lahore General Hospital. The event was attended by prominent medical experts, including Prof. Dr. Muhammad Fareeduddin, MS LGH Prof. Dr. Faryad Hussain and senior members of the medical faculty.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal stated that the newly established clinic will offer advanced diagnostic services, genetic counseling, specialized physiotherapy and nutritional support for patients suffering from Cystic Fibrosis. He added that the facility will also train parents in home-based care to help them better manage their children’s health conditions.
He further noted that the Punjab Government and Health Department remain committed to providing world-class healthcare services, adding that the establishment of this specialized clinic at LGH is a major step toward achieving that objective.
During the awareness seminar, experts explained that Cystic Fibrosis mainly affects the lungs and digestive system, with common symptoms including chronic cough, recurrent chest infections and stunted growth. Dr. Muhammad Usman Ghani highlighted the importance of genetic testing, while Prof. Dr. Muhammad Fareeduddin discussed international developments in gene modulator therapies. Dr. Muhammad Asif Naeem also briefed participants on global research trends and modern clinical practices.
The experts concluded that although a complete cure for Cystic Fibrosis is not yet available, timely diagnosis through the Sweat Chloride Test, along with modern medicines and physiotherapy, can help patients lead healthier and more productive lives.
MS Prof. Dr. Faryad Hussain reiterated that Lahore General Hospital is being upgraded with facilities that meet international standards to ensure quality healthcare for patients.
The ceremony concluded with Prof. Dr. Nazish Saqlain thanking the participants and guest speakers, followed by the distribution of commemorative shields among distinguished guests. Specialists including Dr. Houriya Rehman, Dr. Muzammil Azam, Dr. Muhammad Umair and Dr. Sundas Tahir also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding public awareness campaigns regarding Cystic Fibrosis across Punjab.
