Islamabad — The Pakistani government has collected more than PKR 1.2 trillion (approximately $4.3 billion) in petroleum levy from consumers during the first nine months of the current fiscal year, official documents have revealed.
According to the documents, an additional PKR 35 billion was separately collected under the Climate Support Levy, further adding to the financial burden on ordinary citizens already struggling with record inflation.
The figures highlight the government’s heavy reliance on indirect taxes on petroleum products to meet its revenue targets, particularly under commitments made to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of an ongoing bailout programme.
Economic analysts warn that such levies disproportionately impact lower and middle-income groups, as petroleum costs drive up prices of essential goods and transportation across the country. The government, however, maintains that these collections are critical for fiscal consolidation and economic stabilisation.
