Cape Town — South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has firmly refused to resign despite mounting pressure following the ‘Farmgate’ cash scandal that has plunged the country into a deepening political crisis.
In a nationally televised address, Ramaphosa defended his position and declared his intention to remain in office, just days after the country’s highest court ordered parliament to establish an impeachment committee to investigate the matter.
The scandal — dubbed ‘Farmgate’ — centres on allegations that millions of dollars in cash were concealed at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm and that the theft was subsequently covered up, raising serious questions about the president’s conduct and integrity.
South Africa’s parliament confirmed this week that it would comply with the Constitutional Court’s ruling and proceed with forming the impeachment committee, setting the stage for a potentially historic showdown between the executive and legislature.
Political analysts warn that the crisis poses the most serious threat to Ramaphosa’s presidency since he took office in 2018, while his supporters argue that he remains the best hope for stability and anti-corruption reform in the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
