Karachi: Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert covering the entire country during the upcoming Eid al-Adha holidays, warning that temperatures could rise 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above seasonal norms.
According to forecasters, a high-pressure system is expected to develop on May 25th and intensify further by May 26th. The system is projected to trigger a moderate to severe heatwave between May 25 and May 31 — a period that coincides directly with the Eid celebrations across the country.
In Karachi, maximum temperatures are forecast to reach between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius. Notably, nighttime temperatures are also expected to remain elevated, offering little relief to residents even after sunset — an unusual and particularly uncomfortable pattern for the coastal city.
Meteorologists have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, maintain adequate hydration, and take special care of the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Authorities have also urged those performing Qurbani to ensure sacrificial animals are kept in shaded and well-ventilated areas during the extreme heat.
Health officials are on alert as heatwave conditions during a major public holiday can place significant strain on emergency services, with large gatherings and outdoor activities increasing the risk of heat-related illness.
