Washington / Tehran —
U.S. President Donald Trump declared in a CBS News interview that negotiations with Iran are nearing a conclusion, but made it unequivocally clear that any agreement would be struck solely on American terms.
Trump said the deal would permanently bar Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and ensure its enriched uranium is handled to Washington’s satisfaction. “I will only make a deal where we get everything we want,” he stated bluntly.
In a separate interview, Trump issued a stark warning: “Either we make a good deal, or I will send them to hell,” cautioning that a failure to agree would result in consequences more devastating than anything Iran — or any nation — has ever faced.
Despite the hardline rhetoric, Trump acknowledged uncertainty, putting the odds of a successful agreement at 50-50.
Iran, for its part, confirmed it is finalising a 14-point framework agreement with the United States, though officials signalled that significant differences remain on key issues. Meanwhile, Iran, the United States, and mediator Pakistan have all expressed cautious optimism that a ceasefire deal could be reached soon, following nearly three months of negotiations. The current crisis escalated after a joint U.S.-Israeli military strike killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and more than 40 senior Iranian officials. Tehran retaliated by targeting American military installations, striking Israel with missiles and drones, and closing the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz — disrupting approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply.
