LAHORE: President of the Pakistan Medical Association Lahore chapter, Prof. Shahid Malik, has expressed grave concern over the deaths of two people due to rabies and the recent incident in Sialkot where a rabid dog attacked and bit 18 individuals.
He said that according to reports, four of the victims are currently admitted to the isolation ward of Mayo Hospital Lahore because of the high risk of rabies infection.
Prof. Shahid Malik described the situation as extremely alarming, stating that rabies is a fatal disease that requires urgent preventive and emergency response measures.
He urged the Government of Punjab, district administrations, Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, and Municipal Corporations to prioritize public safety and take immediate and effective action against dangerous stray dogs. He warned that such incidents are resulting in deaths, permanent disabilities, and serious threats to public health, particularly for children and women.
He further stated that Clause 3 of the Punjab Local Government Act 2025 clearly authorizes Municipal Corporations and local governments to take measures for the control and eradication of dangerous animals.
Prof. Shahid Malik demanded the immediate implementation of the law to prevent further loss of lives, disabilities, and the spread of deadly diseases such as Rabies.
He emphasized that taking urgent action against dangerous stray dogs has become a critical matter of public safety and emergency health protection.
