Five of the seven people trapped inside a flooded cave in Laos have been found alive after a harrowing week-long ordeal, rescue officials confirmed Wednesday. The group became stranded when rising floodwaters blocked the cave’s exit, cutting them off from the outside world.
Rescue teams battled difficult terrain and poor visibility inside the cave system before locating the survivors in a dry chamber deeper inside. The five were reported to be in weakened but stable condition and were immediately provided with food, water, and medical assistance.
However, the search is far from over. Two individuals remain unaccounted for, and teams are continuing their operations. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the missing persons are still alive.
“We are relieved to have found five of them, but our mission is not complete,” a rescue spokesperson said. “We will not stop until everyone is accounted for.”
The cause of the flooding is under investigation. Authorities have urged the public to avoid cave systems during the current rainy season.
