TEHRAN/WASHINGTON — Tensions between the United States and Iran have reached a dangerous new level after both sides launched missile and drone strikes against each other’s military targets in the early hours of Wednesday.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it struck an Iranian military installation on Qeshm Island, stating the operation was carried out in response to prior Iranian missile and drone attacks against American assets in the region.
According to CENTCOM, Iran fired ballistic missiles toward Kuwait and Bahrain, all of which failed to reach their targets. Two missiles aimed at Kuwait fell short, while three directed at Bahrain were intercepted by US and Bahraini forces. Three separate drone attacks on naval vessels were also successfully repelled. CENTCOM denied Iranian claims that the Fifth Fleet headquarters and an airbase in Bahrain sustained damage.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the US struck a communications tower on Qeshm Island, prompting retaliatory strikes on American bases in the region, including what the IRGC described as hits on the Fifth Fleet headquarters, an airbase, and military helicopters. The IRGC also claimed to have struck a vessel near the Strait of Hormuz following an attack on an Iranian oil tanker in the area.
Separately, US forces disabled an oil tanker sailing under a Botswana flag that was en route to Iran’s Kharg Island.
The situation in the Gulf region remains highly volatile, with the risk of further escalation a serious concern for the international community.
