COLOGNE — One of Europe’s most iconic landmarks, Cologne Cathedral, has announced plans to introduce an entry fee for tourist visitors beginning July.
Tourists will be required to pay €12 ($13.95) per person upon entry. The fee is intended to help cover the growing costs of maintaining and preserving the centuries-old Gothic structure.
Despite the new charge, the cathedral says it remains committed to its religious mission — a designated area will be kept free of charge for worshippers attending for prayer and religious services.
The cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, draws millions of visitors each year and is one of Germany’s most visited landmarks.
