The quake, one of the strongest to hit the region in recent years, caused casualties and widespread damage. Coastal communities have been urged to evacuate to higher ground immediately as authorities monitor the threat of tsunami waves.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. addressed the nation, stating: “The national government is moving and we will not leave Mindanao behind,” pledging full federal support for disaster relief and recovery operations.
Indonesian authorities also activated emergency protocols along their northern coastlines as a precautionary measure.
