London — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party on Monday, in a statement delivered outside 10 Downing Street.
Starmer confirmed he met with King Charles III earlier in the day to inform him of his decision. He stated he would remain in office as Prime Minister until a new party leader is elected, pledging to ensure a smooth and orderly transition of power.
“I will do everything in my power to support an organised handover to the next Prime Minister,” Starmer said, adding that he would cooperate fully with his successor.
Defending his record, Starmer said his government had strengthened the British economy over the past two years, but acknowledged persistent criticism from within his own party that Labour had weakened under his leadership.
The Labour Party is now expected to launch a formal leadership contest to determine Britain’s next Prime Minister.
