MUZAFFARABAD/ISLAMABAD — The Pakistani government has formally welcomed Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s offer to play a mediating role in the Kashmir issue, signaling a potential shift in diplomatic engagement over the long-standing dispute.
Addressing the assembly, the Prime Minister’s Adviser stated that “depriving refugees of their right to vote is a deviation from the very purpose of the freedom movement,” urging that the issue of voting rights for Kashmiri refugees be resolved before the upcoming Azad Kashmir elections.
The adviser also cautioned against what he described as deliberate attempts to derail the democratic process, asserting that the protest call issued by a banned committee was specifically designed to obstruct the Azad Kashmir election schedule.
Key Points:
Government endorses Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s Kashmir mediation role
Kashmiri refugees’ voting rights flagged as a core democratic concern
Banned outfit’s protest call condemned as election interference
Azad Kashmir polls face mounting political pressure
Analysts suggest that while Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s involvement could open new diplomatic channels, the unresolved question of refugee enfranchisement remains a flashpoint that could destabilize the electoral process in Azad Kashmir.
