SHENZHEN, China — China has reclaimed the top spot in global supercomputing as LineShine, installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen, surpassed America’s El Capitan to lead the prestigious TOP500 rankings released Tuesday. It marks the first time a Chinese supercomputer has topped the list since 2017.
According to TOP500 scientists, LineShine achieved a staggering speed of 2.198 Exaflops — capable of performing over two quintillion calculations per second. Notably, the system runs entirely on traditional CPUs rather than the GPU-based architecture favored by most modern high-performance machines, consuming approximately 42.2 megawatts of power.
The latest rankings also feature four European systems in the top 10, with machines from Italy, Switzerland and Japan among them. Meanwhile, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, speaking at the World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos in Dalian, defended China’s technological rise, calling it not a “China Shock 2.0” but a “China Opportunity 2.0” — promising broader access to advanced technologies and a fairer distribution of their benefits across the globe.
