MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia and the United States, as the world’s two largest nuclear powers, bear a shared responsibility for ensuring global security and stability.
According to the Kremlin, Putin made the remarks in a congratulatory message to US President Donald Trump on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence. He noted that the signing of the Declaration of Independence marked not only the birth of the United States but also a significant milestone in world history.
Putin recalled that Russia had extended unconditional support to the North American colonies in their struggle for independence from British colonial rule, and pointed out that Moscow and Washington had been allies during both World Wars. “We were allies in two world wars, together freeing humanity from the horrors of Nazism, and later played a key role in laying the foundations of the modern world order,” he said.
He added that today, as the two largest nuclear powers, Russia and the United States bear a special responsibility for ensuring security and stability at the global level. Putin expressed confidence that constructive, equal, and mutually beneficial relations between Moscow and Washington would serve the interests of both nations as well as the broader international community.
It may be noted that after the end of the Cold War, the United States emerged as the world’s sole superpower, but Russia has, over time, managed to restore some of its global standing — even as Washington has imposed numerous international sanctions on Moscow, including restrictions on the sale of Russian oil in global markets. Under Putin’s leadership, Russia continues to seek a greater role in international affairs so that the US cannot unilaterally influence global decisions.
