LAHORE — An annual audit of the Cardiology Department at Mayo Hospital Lahore has flagged serious discrepancies in the record of stents and balloons.
According to the audit report, 232 stents worth Rs 1.13 crore and 1,059 balloons worth Rs 1.10 crore were found missing from official records, taking the total value of the missing medical stock to Rs 2.23 crore.
Hospital administration has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the matter. The MS and CEO of Mayo Hospital issued a notification forming the committee on July 3, 2026.
The audit report has implicated the Registrar of the Cardiology Department, alleging his involvement in the disappearance of the stents and balloons. According to the report, the registrar is accused of selling government-supplied stents and balloons to private hospitals, and of attempting to influence the inquiry to halt action against him.
The inquiry is ongoing, and final responsibility will be determined once the investigation is complete.
Reacting to the development, Mayo Hospital COO Dr. Abdul Mudabbir Rehan said, “I am being targeted for exposing alleged corruption. Certain YDA (Young Doctors Association) officials pressured me and threatened to have me removed from my job.” He added that he would resist all pressure in the interest of merit, transparency, and patient welfare.
