Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “We’re talking to the Iranians and we’ll see what happens.” He claimed the US had been preparing for the largest attack since World War II, but that Iran itself requested negotiations — a claim Tehran has denied.
US Vice President JD Vance confirmed he has no disagreement with Trump on Iran policy, saying the US position has grown stronger and that Tehran will not succeed in acquiring nuclear weapons. Vance said the Iranian government is fractured, with one faction pushing toward war and another trying to end it, adding that talks with Iran would take time.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the US, through mediators, sent Iran a message expressing willingness to return to full compliance with the memorandum of understanding signed by both sides in Islamabad last June. However, he clarified that no formal negotiations are currently underway, and Iran has not yet decided whether to move to a second phase of talks concerning its nuclear program.
Meanwhile, Iran announced “major progress” in talks with Oman over Strait of Hormuz shipping routes, under which traffic would pass through Iranian waters. Trump said an agreement could be announced this week, potentially reopening the crucial waterway.
