Malaysia Seizes Suspected Container Carrying Goods Bound for Israel

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian authorities have seized a suspected container believed to be carrying goods destined for Israel from Tanjung Pelepas Port in Johor.
The seizure was carried out on Friday by the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency following a tip-off. An initial inspection raised concerns that the shipment may violate Malaysian customs regulations, which prohibit the direct or indirect export of goods to Israel.
Authorities are now investigating the nature, details and intended use of the goods to determine whether the shipment falls under Malaysia’s Strategic Trade Act.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomed the seizure, saying it reflected Malaysia’s commitment to ensuring that its territory does not become a commercial transit route in support of Israel. He said the action was in line with restrictions imposed by the Malaysian government in December 2023 and the country’s obligations under the Hague Group.
The Hague Group described the seizure as a practical demonstration of states’ responsibilities under international law. It said countries must not assist in maintaining what it described as Israel’s unlawful presence in the occupied Palestinian territories, in accordance with the International Court of Justice’s July 2024 advisory opinion.
Malaysia, a founding member of the Hague Group, has pledged to prevent the transfer of weapons and dual-use items to Israel. In December 2023, the country also barred Israeli shipping company ZIM from using its ports and imposed restrictions on Israeli-flagged vessels.
The latest seizure indicates that Malaysian authorities are also scrutinising suspicious cargo bound for Israel, regardless of the nationality of the vessel transporting it.
