Madrid (Agencies) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced a series of unprecedented measures aimed at pressuring Israel to halt what he described as “genocide” in Gaza.
In a televised address, Sánchez accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of “using the right to self-defense as a pretext to annihilate defenseless Palestinians,” citing bombings of hospitals and the starvation of children as evidence of systematic atrocities.
While reaffirming Spain’s recognition of Israel’s right to exist and to defend itself, Sánchez stressed that such rights cannot justify “bombing hospitals and starving innocent children.”
Key measures announced include:
A complete legal ban on the sale of weapons and military equipment to Israel.
Prohibition of fuel shipments for the Israeli army through Spanish ports.
Restrictions on military supplies being delivered to Israel via Spanish airspace.
A ban on products manufactured in Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories.
Increased financial support for the Palestinian Authority and UNRWA.
Travel bans on individuals directly involved in war crimes and human rights violations in Gaza.
Sánchez said the Spanish government will soon pass a decree to formalize these restrictions, adding that the steps are intended to “stop the killings, bring perpetrators to justice, and provide urgent relief to the Palestinian people.”
