New York Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu sharply criticized New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday after Mamdani called him a “war criminal.” In a video posted on X, Netanyahu said, “Shame on you, Mr. Mamdani. Shame on you for backing Hamas,” and accused Mamdani of “inciting riots against New York’s Jews.” Mamdani, who became New York City’s first Muslim mayor after winning the 2025 election, has denied accusations of antisemitism. Earlier, Mamdani told CNN, “Regarding Netanyahu, I’ve described him as I see him — a war criminal and the architect of a horrifying genocide against the Palestinian people.” He asked why anyone should be above accountability if the ICC deems them arrestable, though he acknowledged New York City has no legal authority to enforce the ICC warrant against Netanyahu. Netanyahu responded: “I’m coming to the UN. I will tell the truth about our brave soldiers, and I will tell the truth about you.” According to Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, over concerns about protests, Netanyahu’s plane will avoid JFK Airport and instead land at a New Jersey military base or Newark Airport, and he will not spend the night in New York. He is expected to arrive Thursday morning, address the UN General Assembly, and depart immediately for Tel Aviv without meeting President Trump. Netanyahu has been wanted by the ICC since 2024 on war crimes charges related to Gaza; neither Israel nor the U.S. is a member of the court.
