NEW YORK, — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez launched a scathing attack on Israel over the war in the Gaza Strip during his address to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly on Thursday, accusing Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of continuing an ongoing genocide. He said his government unconditionally condemns what is happening in Gaza.
Sánchez described Israeli military actions against Palestinians in Gaza as genocide and criticized the double standards applied internationally when it comes to wars and crises. He said “selfish, ignorant and cold-hearted” powers around the world are waging illegal wars, killing innocent civilians, ignoring the suffering of millions, and undermining the United Nations and the multilateral system in the process.
Citing Ukraine, Lebanon and Iran, the Spanish Prime Minister said Spain has opposed wars of aggression over the past eight years, arguing such actions violate the UN Charter. He called for renewed commitment to the rule of international law, stronger backing for the UN and international judicial bodies, and accountability for those responsible for violations, in line with the values underpinning the UN and the 2030 Agenda.
