NEW YORK — Tens of millions of people across the northeastern United States were hit by a powerful storm that brought coastal flooding, power outages, travel chaos and the cancellation of major events. The National Weather Service said the nor’easter brought dangerous coastal flooding, high winds and heavy rain to New York City, Boston and surrounding areas on Saturday.
States of emergency were declared in New York and New Jersey. One person was killed in Brooklyn after being struck by a falling tree. The storm knocked out power to more than 160,000 households, while over 2,400 flights were delayed and 1,199 cancelled. Streets and homes flooded in the New Jersey shore towns of Surf City and Manasquan.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay out of floodwaters. Weather-related cancellations and relocations hit several sporting and entertainment events, including a Red Sox game, a Red Bull New York soccer match, the Global Citizen Festival concert in Central Park, and Ed Sheeran’s Boston concert.
