KUALA LUMPUR,: Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, wife of former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad and one of the country’s earliest Muslim women doctors, died on Monday at the age of 100. The office of the former prime minister confirmed her death.
State news agency Bernama, citing her son Mokhzani Mahathir, reported that she died on Monday morning at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur. She is survived by Mahathir, 101, and seven children.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim offered condolences to Mahathir and his family. In a post on X, he said the nation would always remember Tun Dr Siti Hasmah as a motherly figure and value her service to the country. Anwar said he had instructed authorities to give her a full state funeral.
Born in 1926 in Klang, Selangor, Siti Hasmah was among the first Malay women to become doctors in Malaya.
