OCCUPIED JERUSALEM: Jewish settlers carried out a series of attacks across the West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, over the past 24 hours, according to local reports, with vehicles set on fire, residential areas raided and farmland targeted. Settlers also entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and performed religious rituals. Incidents were reported in Ramallah, Hebron, Nablus and Jerusalem.
In the village of Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah, settlers attacked at dawn on Sunday and set several vehicles ablaze. No figures have been released on the number of vehicles burned or the financial damage. The previous evening, Palestinian vehicles were targeted on the Marj Sayya road between Al-Mughayyir and Abu Falah. Al-Mughayyir council head Amin Abu Alia said settlers, accompanied by Israeli troops, attacked cars and badly damaged one; no casualties were reported. He said dozens of settlers gathered at the town’s entrance and let their livestock loose among homes, while soldiers fired tear gas. Settlers also raided the Al-Tir neighbourhood of Ramallah.
In Tal Ma’in, east of Yatta south of Hebron, and on farmland in Fir’al, settlers let livestock into olive groves and cultivated fields. The olive harvest is approaching, and many Palestinian families depend on it for part of their annual income. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned in a Sept 18 report that protection risks had risen markedly ahead of the olive season amid continued settler violence and damage to agricultural property.
Local media reported that on Sunday morning settlers entered the Al-Aqsa compound through the Mughrabi Gate and performed religious rituals in its courtyards, under heavy Israeli police security, during a Jewish holiday. Singing, dancing and the waving of Israeli flags were reported. Security across the Old City and around the mosque remained extremely tight.
