TEL AVIV: Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of using the Flydubai aircraft incident for political purposes at the expense of Israel’s security.
Lapid said that nothing resembling the incident involving Flydubai flight FZ1073 was mentioned during the security briefing he received from Netanyahu on Tuesday night.
In a post on X, Lapid said, “Let me make this clear: nothing even resembling this morning’s plane incident appeared in last night’s security briefing with the prime minister — not something similar, not a hint, not even an indication.”
He accused figures linked to the government of attempting to exploit the incident for political gain and warned against using security developments in election-related messaging.
The dispute followed an emergency involving Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The aircraft transmitted emergency signals, changed course and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
According to Netanyahu, one pilot stabbed the other and apparently attempted to crash the aircraft. Flydubai described the incident as an altercation in the cockpit. The incident remains under investigation, while both pilots were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
