NEW DELHI: Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said her intended return home is aimed at restoring democracy and defending the rights of the country’s people.
In an interview with news agency PTI, Hasina criticised Tarique Rahman’s government, alleging that Bangladesh was facing a severe national crisis and that extremist forces had regained ground.
She said Bangladeshis should be allowed to determine their future through free, fair and inclusive elections, describing her return as a step towards putting the country back in the hands of its people.
Hasina said she wanted to stand alongside the public, fight for their rights and help restore democracy, security and development. The supplied report, however, did not specify a firm date for her return.
The former prime minister also criticised the government’s decision not to attend the BRICS summit in India, arguing that participation could have opened new opportunities for Bangladesh’s economic and social development.
She said foreign policy should be guided by national interests rather than personal reactions or short-term political calculations.
